Salem State 104, Tufts 89

MEDFORD, Ma. — Senior captain Allen Reid (Southbridge, MA) scored a game-high 33 points to lead the visiting Salem State College Vikings to a 104-89 victory at Tufts University in non-conference men’s basketball action on Sunday night.

Salem opened up a tight game in the second half and improved its record to 4-0 overall. Reid connected on five three-pointers in the game and had 22 points at halftime. Tufts, which was led by 20 points apiece from senior tri-captain Drew Kaklamanos (Jupiter, FL) and sophomore Brian Kumf (Milford, MA), dropped to 1-3 overall.

The host Jumbos scored the first 10 points of the game, but Salem State answered with 15 of the next 20 and the game was tied at 15-15 at the 13:30 mark of the first half. Tufts had a small lead for most of the next 10 minutes, but Salem surged to a 46-43 advantage at halftime. Reid and senior center Ifesinachi Anosike (Staten Island, NY) combined for 37 of the Vikings’ 46 points at the break. Kumf led the Jumbos with 18 on 7 for 9 shooting in the first half.

Salem State built a 12-point margin, 67-55, after a lay-up by Anosike at 15:06 of the second half. Tufts responded by scoring the next nine points and then was within one at 68-67 on a three-pointer by Kaklamanos at 12:49. Salem quickly turned that back into a 12-point game by scoring the next 11 points to lead 79-67 on a layup by junior Aaron Goldwine (Rocky Hill, CT) at 10:06 of the second half. Tufts was never closer than 10 and the difference grew to as many as 17 over the remainder of the game.

Salem out-scored Tufts at the free throw line, 29-14, with Anosike hitting 10 of 14 attempts and finishing with 26 points, 14 rebounds, eight blocks and four assists. Junior Isaiah Bradshaw (Cambridge, MA) added 16 points and six rebounds for the Vikings, who shot 53.1 percent (34/64) from floor.
