Taking a feed from a driving Lindsay May on the left wing, Straw nailed a fourteen foot baseline jumper to give 12th-ranked Puget Sound a five-point advantage. A Sarah Carnahan foul shot with eleven ticks left provided the final margin of victory. Straw ended the game with 13 points and four rebounds, to go along with a pair of blocks and steals. May, collecting one of three assists on the decisive bucket, overcame a weeklong sickness to record 14 points and seven rebounds.
Carleton got a huge effort from junior forward Megan Vig, who collected a double double in the Knights’ third straight loss to a Northwest Conference opponent. Vig had game highs in points with 27 and rebounds with 10, shooting 12 for 22 from the floor.
Carleton shot only 35.2% from the field but was able to keep it close by collecting 17 offensive rebounds, a factor that contributed heavily to the Knights holding a 71-47 advantage in field goal attempts. Puget Sound held a 41-39 rebounding edge overall.
The Loggers countered Carleton’s advantage in field goal attempts at the line, where they held a 21-10 advantage on made free throws. Puget Sound shot77.8% (21/27) for the game, compared to just 62.5% (10/16) for the Knights.
After four straight home wins to open the season Puget Sound will take to the road this coming weekend, facing Chapman and CS-Hayward Friday and Saturday respectively. The Knights remain on the road, facing University of St. Thomas on Wednesday in the MIAC opener for each school.
