Texas Lutheran 89, East Texas Baptist 72

SEGUIN, Texas — Tommy Stolhandske scored 34 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Texas Lutheran men’s basketball team to an 89-72 victory Saturday in the American Southwest Conference opener for both squads.

In Texas Lutheran’s Memorial Gymansium, Stolhandske hit 12 of his 15 shot attempts and was 10-of-14 from the free throw line. Stolhandske, the ASC West Preseason Player of the Year, also recorded two assists and two blocks.

Texas Lutheran (2-2, 1-0 ASC) shot 56.4 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from the three-point line. The Bulldogs led 42-35 after shooting 57.1 percent in the first half. TLU out-scored the Tigers 47-37 and shot 55.6 percent in the second half.

East Texas Baptist (0-2, 0-1 ASC) received 24 points, five rebounds and two assists from Cedric Isom. Cedric’s twin brother, Chris, added 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Cedric Isom is the ASC East Division Preseason Player of the Year.

No other Tiger broke into double figures. East Texas Baptist shot 43.1 percent from the field and was just 5-for-21 from the three-point line.

Will Hudson and Nik Summers each added 16 points for the Bulldogs, the preseason co-favorite in the ASC West Division.

TLU also registered 20 assists to 13 turnovers.

TLU point guard Jason Morales collected five assists, four rebounds and three assists.

Texas Lutheran continues American Southwest Conference play this Monday with a 7:30 p.m. game against LeTourneau University.
