Allegheny 90, Penn State-Dubois 73

MEADVILLE, Pa. (Nov. 27, 2004) — — The Allegheny men’s basketball team used 52 bench points to pass the Lions of Penn State-DuBois 90-73 in opening action of the National City Holiday Classic Saturday night. In game one, John Carroll (Ohio) University beat Hiram (Ohio) College 80-64.

The Gators broke out to a 14-point half-time lead by converting 10-14 free throws and shooting 57.1% from the field. Freshman guard Justin Schmitt dished out four assists in the half, while junior forward Matt Majzlik came off the bench to score 11 first half points.

A fastbreak layup by DuBois’ Phil Moore at the 15:41 mark brought the Lions to within 11 points but that would be as close as they’d come, as Allegheny had an answer or two for every made Lion shot from that point forward.

Schmitt, Majzlik, and junior guard Sean Brakey were the players to watch for Allegheny in the second half. Schmitt turned on the offense, scoring seven points and grabbing four offensive rebounds. Majzlik grabbed three boards of his own and scored four more baskets to finish with 19 points on eight for nine shooting from the floor. Brakey came off the bench and hit three three-point baskets and grabbed four rebounds in nine minutes of action.

Moore finished as the games high scorer with 26 points, while fellow Lion, Brenton Decker totaled 16 points.

Brakey finished with 12 points as freshman forward Ben Torsney totaled nine points and five rebounds and Schmitt grabbed seven boards while scoring nine points and dishing out five assists.

The Gators will face John Carroll at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Wise Center for the Championship game after Hiram takes on Penn State-DuBois at 1 p.m.
