Albion 81, Washington U. 61

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Senior guard Mike Thomas scored 14 points and juniors Mike Bailey and Garrett Gibbons added 11 points apiece as the Albion College men's basketball team upset 21st-ranked Washington (Mo.) University, 81-61, on the first night of the Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge.

Boosted by 57 percent shooting from the field (32 of 56), Albion held the lead for the last 31 minutes of the game.

Washington held a 13-8 lead when Mike Grunst scored a basket with 14:45 left in the first half.

Albion then took control by scoring the next 11 points of the game. Senior center Will Braaksma started the Briton rally by knocking down a jumper, and Bailey and Thomas followed with three-point field goals. Sophomore guard Zak Silas added a layup, and senior forward Travis DePree completed the run when he made the first of a two-shot opportunity from the free throw line.

After Washington trimmed Albion's lead to two points, 19-17, the Britons went on an 8-0 rally to build a double-digit advantage with 2-1/2 minutes left in the first half. Braaksma again started the run when he tipped in a Thomas miss. Sophomore guard Lonny Fulse continued the run with a layup and DePree made a pair of free throws and a layup.

Albion held a 34-22 lead at halftime, and built the cushion to 20 when junior center Brandon Crawford tipped in a Bailey miss with 15 minutes left in the contest.

Eleven Britons scored in the game. In addition to the players in double figures, DePree finished with nine points and five rebounds, and Crawford and Fulse contributed eight points apiece. Fulse also dished out a team-high seven assists.

Braaksma scored six points, Silas, sophomore forward Evan Way, and freshman guard Jim Cash all scored four points, and senior forward Jamison Turnbull finished with two points.

Rob Keller scored 15 points for Washington (2-2 overall). Anthony Hollins also scored in double figures for the Bears with 12 points.

Albion (3-0 overall) will meet DePauw University or Wisconsin Lutheran College in the title game of the Mike Rokicki Community Versus Cancer Challenge Sunday afternoon.
