Eastern Connecticut State defeated Southern Virginia 75-65 in the other semifinal.
The Captains raced out to a 40-21 halftime lead on just 41% (16-of-39) shooting from the field, including 6-of-14 (43%) on three-point attempts. CNU held UMPI to 7-of-21 (33%) shooting from the floor and 2-of-4 (50%) on three's.
The second half was much of the same as the Captains out scored the Owls 50-36. UMPI shot 12-of-26 (46%) from the field in the second half, 19-of-47 (40%) for the game. CNU forced 25 UMPI turnovers.
The Captains finished 32-of-78 (41%) from the field and 13-of-30 (43%) on three's.
The Owls were led by Fabian Lennox with 25 points on 10-of-21 shooting. Mike Latchford added 13 points.
CNU was led by Jeremy Romeo's 23 points. He was 8-of-15 from the field including 5-of-11 from behind the arc. Blake Brookman added 15 points and nine assists. Roderic Carey pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. The Captains out rebounded the Owls 50-30.
CNU (2-0) will take on Eastern Connecticut Stats (3-1) in the championship game of the CNU Invitational Saturday at 8 pm. Maine-Presque Isle will take on Southern Virginia at 6 pm in the third place game.
