Texas-San Antonio 69, Texas Lutheran 45

SAN ANTONIO — The University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners held Texas Lutheran to 28 percent shooting from the field and defeated the Bulldogs 69-45, Wednesday evening in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

In the UTSA Convocation Center, Ray Selvage and Rapheal Posey scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the Roadrunners (2-0). Abram Donlon added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Selvage also grabbed eight rebounds as the Roadrunners used their team height advantage to out-rebound the Bulldogs 47-37.

Texas Lutheran (1-1) received a team-high 13 points and three rebounds from senior shooting guard Nik Summers. Summers was 5-for-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from the three-point line.

Senior post Tommy Stolhandske had 11 points and 12 rebounds, but he was just 3-for-15 from the field. Stolhandske also had three assists and was 5-for-6 from the foul line.

Junior wing Will Hudson and sophomore post Jerrod Carpenter were held to a combined 10 points. Hudson missed eight of his 10 shots, and Carpenter was 2-for-11.

Mike Ekanem had a strong night off the bench for TLU. The senior guard chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.

UTSA led by 10 at the half and quickly jumped to a 22-point lead seven minutes into the second half. Adam McCoy’s three at the 12:57 mark gave UTSA a 48-26 advantage.

But the Bulldogs clawed back, cutting the Roadrunners’ lead back to 13 with 9:37 to play after a jumper by Carpenter.

Turnovers by TLU in the last five minutes allowed UTSA to stretch the lead back to 24.

Texas Lutheran returns to NCAA Division III competition this weekend with its American Southwest Conference opener against East Texas Baptist. The men’s game tips off at 3 p.m. in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium. The TLU women start the basketball doubleheader with a 1 p.m. game against the ETBU Lady Tigers.
