It marked the official season opener for both teams, although the Division II Vulcans had played an exhibition game against the University of Hawai'i on Nov. 14, falling to the Rainbows 75-49.
Carleton managed a meager five field goals over the first 20 minutes, trailing 38-16 at the break. The Knights were a bit better in the second half, connecting on 37 percent of its field goal attempts making 17 trips to the free-throw line and converting on 14 of those attempts in outscoring the hosts 47-40 in the second half despite the Vulcans shooting 59 percent. The Knights faced a 53-32 rebounding margin in favor of the taller, more athletic Vulcans, who pulled down 16 offensive caroms.
Dan Forkrud added 14 points and seven rebounds and Kyle Beste was also in double figures with 11.
Osadonor Esene paced all players with 19 points and added nine rebounds and Alex Cabognot added 17 points and five assists. Justin Dobson came off the bench to score 12 points, as the Vulcans held a 29-5 edge in bench points.
Carleton returns to action, facing Chaminade University in Honolulu on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 3 p.m.
