Davidson 103, Maine-Farmington 33

Wednesday, November 24, 2004 — DAVIDSON, N.C. — Five Wildcats scored in double figures, led by juniors Jason Morton and Brendan Winters with 17 points apiece, to lead host Davidson to a 103-33 victory over the undersized University of Maine-Farmington on Wednesday night. With the win, the Wildcats improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Beavers suffered their first loss to drop to 3-1.

Morton, in his third game as a Wildcat, hit 7-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point range for his 17 points while Winters canned 5-of-8 shots with a pair of treys and five free throws. Fellow junior Ian Johnson had 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, junior Matt McKillop tallied 12 points on 4-of-5 from downtown and freshman Thomas Sander recorded 12 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds.

All 12 Davidson players that suited up scored at least two points in the game as the 'Cats shot 53.7 percent (36-of-67) from the floor with 13 three-pointers. Each Wildcat also recorded at least one rebound, and 11 of the 12 even had at least one of the team’s 29 assists.

Meanwhile, the Wildcat defense was just as formidable as Maine-Farmington shot just 19.7 percent (13-for-66) from the floor and 10.0 percent (3-of-30) from behind the arc. Davidson, who has not been outrebounded by its opponent for 14 consecutive games, held a 59-33 advantage on the boards.

Winters scored seven of the Wildcats' first nine points, but a Steve Ginn layup 3:19 into the game cut the Davidson lead to 9-7. Over the next 11-plus minutes, however, the 'Cats outscored the Beavers, 32-2, while holding them without a field goal. Davidson drained six three-pointers during the run, including two each from McKillop and Winters. Johnson scored the final five points of the half with a three-point play and a putback at the buzzer for a 56-17 Wildcat lead at the intermission.

It was more of the same in the second half as Davidson stretched its lead to 40, then 50 points. The starters were gone before the second media timeout, and the bench players continued the onslaught. After a Beaver jumper with 7:37 to play went through to make the score 85-30, UMF managed just one three-pointer for the remainder of the game as the Wildcats finished the game on an 18-3 run.

Trafton Teague scored one-third of the Beavers' points with 11, plus topped the team with six rebounds.

The 70-point margin was the largest for Davidson since trouncing Washington & Jefferson by 81 points, 125-44, two seasons ago.

Davidson will next take the court on Saturday, Nov. 27 at The Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa., for a game against St. Joseph's at 4 p.m. Maine-Farmington heads home to host Thomas College on Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
