CHESTER, Pa. — Widener (2-1) darted out to a 45-32 halftime lead, but had to fend off a late Chestnut Hill (1-2) rally as the Pioneers defeated the Griffins 80-76 in the Pioneers home opener on Tuesday night.

Holding just a two point lead with 2:30 remaining at 78-76, Widener held Chestnut Hill scoreless as senior guard Casey Stitzel made two foul shots with just five seconds remaining to seal the
win.

Chestnut Hill had a chance to tie the score or take the lead in the final 2:30, but missed three three-pointers. The Griffins were a dismal 3-of-20 from
behind the three-point line.

The Pioneers put five players in double figures, with senior guard Matt Sheaffer and sophomore guard Essien Ford each having a team-high 16 points.

Junior forward Ron Michael had 13 points off the bench, while sophomore forward Malcolm Thomas had 11.

The Pioneers held a 42-39 rebounding edge, with Sheaffer grabbing a team-high nine boards.

Sophomore guard Issac Greer had a game-high 24 points and ten rebounds for Chestnut Hill in the loss.

Widener will take on Methodist Saturday night in the York (Pa.) Tournament.
