Lynchburg 91, Averett 86

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Averett University men’s basketball team had four scorers in double figures, but were unable to overcome a 20-point first half deficit Tuesday at Lynchburg College. Lynchburg held on for a 91-86 win over the Cougars.

Averett (1-1) trailed 42-22 with 5:41 remaining in the first half. But, after a 15-5 spurt to close the half, Averett trimmed the Hornets (2-1) advantage to 47-37 at the half.

Lynchburg led by as many as 16 in the second half and led 86-74 with 2:18 remaining in the contest. However, Aaron Shelton hit a free throw with 2:16 remaining to start a late Averett run. After 3-pointers by Jeremy Haskins, Sterling Williams, and Cameron Brown, the Cougars found themselves within striking distance at 89-86 with 10 seconds remaining. Unfortunately for Averett, Brown’s triple was the final bucket for the Averett. Two late Hornets free throws left the 91-86 final margin.

Matt Sweeney led Lynchburg with 16 points, while Todd Crown netted 14. For the second game in a row, the Cougars shot 50 percent, but allowed the Hornets to score on 53 percent of their shot attempts.

Williams and Haskins paved the way for the Cougars with 17 points each. Brown added 16, while Shelton notched a career-high 12. Averett won the battle on the boards by a 37-33 deficit and scored 15 second chance points. Lymon Gregory’s eight boards was a team-high.

Averett returns to action next Tuesday in the Grant Center with a 7 p.m. showdown with Newport News Apprentice.
