Croy & Lentz lead Jackets to win at ‘Berg
--Tiffin, Ohio—Junior Curt Croy and freshman Mike Lentz combined for 37 points as the DC Yellow Jackets won 95-93 at Heidelberg College on Tuesday night in Tiffin, Ohio.
Croy, a Ottawa, Ohio product, sank a free throw with 16 second left to give Defiance a two point lead following a Lents three-pointer at the 36-second mark that pushed the Jackets into control of the game. Croy scored 18 points on 5-of-13 shooting with four treys. Lentz hit 7-of-14 from the floor with three triples for 19 points. Senior Brett Hammons led DC in rebounding with nine and also tallied 11 points.
Defiance led at the half 48-45 after building a 13-point lead 16 minutes into the game. Heidelberg went on a 20-10 run in the last four minutes of the opening period to close the gap and then built an eight-point lead midway through the second stanza. Lentz and Croy each had a 12-point burst in the second half to help the Jackets earn the win. The pair also tied for the team lead in assists with three.
Freshman point guard Trent Meyer, from Deshler, Ohio, had 11 points, hitting 3-of-5 three-point attempts, and committed no turnovers in 14-minutes of play to help solidify the Jacket attack. DC’s bench proved to be a deciding factor as the Jacket reserves outscored the Princes’ bench 46-24. The Jackets also held a 30-18 point advantage in the paint.
In the many swings of momentum, the game was tied seven times and the lead changed hands on five occasions.
DC improves to 2-1 on the year while Heidelberg falls to 1-2. The Jackets will next suit up when they open their home slate on Monday, November, 29th against Marygrove College of Detroit.
