Bates 77, Southern Maine 62

LEWISTON, Maine — Sophomore forward Rob Stockwell scored a career high 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bates College men's basketball team to a 77-62 win over the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday night in Alumni Gymnasium.

Stockwell was 10-for-17 from the floor for the Bobcats, who improved to 3-0. The Huskies fell to 1-2.

After allowing a layup off the opening tip, Stockwell scored nine straight points on three consecutive layups and a three pointer to give Bates a 9-2 lead. USM responded with a 12-2 run to take a 14-11 lead with 11:09 remaining in the first half.

Bates again took advantage of easy scoring opportunities on the interior, with forwards Stockwell, Matt Chudomel and Elliott Linsley accounting for eight points on a 12-0 run which gave the Bobcats a 23-14 lead. Bates led by as many as 12 in the half and held a 33-24 lead at halftime.

The Bobcats slowly pulled away in the second half, and USM couldn't get within 10 points in the final 15 minutes of the game.

Brian Gerrity added 18 points for Bates, while Linsley scored 10 on 3-for-4 shooting from the floor and a 4-for-4 performance from the free throw line. Zak Ray had six points, seven assists, two steals and just one turnover.

Jason Levecque scored his 1000th point for USM, notching 17 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Mike Francoeur also scored 17 for the Huskies, while Jesse McKinnell added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Bates will play in the UMass Boston Tournament this weekend, while USM hosts Husson on Saturday.
