Cabrini 72, Newport News 66

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Senior Messiah Reames hit three free throws in the last 15 seconds as visiting Cabrini College defeated the Apprentice School 72-66 in a non-conference matchup on Monday night.

Reames, who had 17 points and six rebounds for Cabrini (1-2) hit a pair of free throws to put Cabrini ahead 71-66 with 15 seconds left and hit another with 11 seconds left to ice the win. The backbreaker was a 3-pointer from freshman Chris Dailey with 1:58 left that put Cabrini ahead 69-64.

The first half was a back-and-forth contest that saw six ties and 12 lead changes with the Builders holding the largest lead at the 13:37 mark on a Charles Holiday jumper for a 19-14 advantage. The last tie of the half came on a pair of Colin Fitzgerald free throws for Cabrini and a33-all score with 2:02 left.

Apprentice School was paced by Curtis Pender with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. Holiday followed with 16 points, four rebounds and five assists, while freshman Michael Dunston hit five 3-pointers en route to his 15 points. Nathan Robinson was the leading rebounder for the Builders with 11 to go along with 13 points and three blocked shots.

Cabrini was topped in scoring by Jim McMahon with 18 points, Reames with 17 and Anthony Bennett off the bench with 12 points.
