Gallaudet 62, Yeshiva 58

NEW YORK — After downing Moravian in its season opener on Friday, the Gallaudet University men’s basketball team improved to 2-0 overall with a 62-58 victory at non-league foe Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon. Junior forward Robert Haney Jr. led the Bison with 22 points, while classmate forward Frank Jackson chipped in with 19 points and a game-high nine boards.

Gallaudet held a 16-13 advantage after Haney – who tallied 13 of his points in the first half – knocked down a short jumper from the right baseline midway through the opening stanza. They extended the lead to 26-17 late in the half when rookie guard Sekoe White hit a layup.

After taking a 29-22 advantage into the locker room at halftime, the Maccabees began mounting a comeback. Sophomore forward Roy Goldstein hit a three-pointer from the left corner, giving the hosts a 39-38 lead with 13:30 remaining. The Bison knotted the score at 50-50 when junior guard Brendan Stern connected with Jackson on a half court alley-oop lob. Shortly thereafter, Haney buried a trifecta from the left wing, extending the advantage to 56-52 with just under four minutes remaining. Yeshiva rallied yet again and took a 57-56 lead when senior forward Ralfi Halpert drained a three just before the shot clock expired with 2:40 remaining.

The Bison then put a rally of their own together, regaining a 59-57 advantage when senior forward Bradley Miller knocked down a pair from the charity stripe with 1:27 left. Yeshiva had one last chance to tie the game, however, a baseline jumper fell short with 12 seconds remaining. Jackson put the game out of reach when he netted a pair of freethrows to round the scoring out at 62-58.

Gallaudet returns to action for its conference opener at Mary Washington on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
