Thiel 91, Penn State-Berks 63

HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Thiel College senior guard Daryl Moore finished with 26 points and six assists to lead the Tomcats to their 91-63 victory over Penn State Berks-Lehigh Valley Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the 2004 Mutual Benefit "Doc" Greene Tournament, hosted by Juniata College.

Thiel (1-1) exploded midway through the first half after a jumper by Penn St.-Berks Steven Fulton tied the game at 16-16 with 10:21 remaining.

Thiel broke loose on a 29-2 run over the next 7:11 and with junior forward Percy Sweeting's jumper took a commanding 45-18 lead with 3:10 to go in the opening half. Penn State Berks finished the half on a 7-0 run to trail by 20 (45-25) at the break.

A jumper from freshman forward Joe Herrmann increased the Tomcat lead to 30 (63-33) with 6:29 gone in the second half. After leading by as many as 38 (87-49) late in the game Thiel was able to get by with the 28-point win.

The Tomcats had five players finish the game in double figures, led by Moore's 26. He finished eight-of-17 from the floor but hit six-of-nine three-point attempts. Senior guard Ryan Singleton finished with 15, freshman forward Max Slater with 13, Sweeting with 11 and a game-best 15 rebounds and Herrmann with 10 and 11 boards.

Thiel held a commanding 55-45 edge in rebounding and forced Penn St.-Berks into committing 27 turnovers (16 on steals).

Fulton paced Penn St.-Berks with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Dan Gibney, Travis Miller and Mike Blatt each added 10.

Thiel will return to action on Saturday, November 27 when they will host Baldwin-Wallace College at 3 p.m. at Beeghly Gymnasium.
