MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Trailing 17-14 midway through the first half, Western Connecticut went on a 26-7 tear over the next seven minutes to pull ahead 40-24 and never looked back on its way to the tournament title over homestanding Wesleyan. Tournament MVP senior Brice Assie went 11-for-15 from the field and 4-for-4 at the line to tie for game scoring honors with Wesleyan senior Tim Holland, who made the all-tournament team. Also on the all-tournament team for Wesleyan was sophomore Jared Ashe while senior Jay Reginatto, with 21 points (5-for-8 on three-pointers) was all-tournament as well for Western.
Assie and Reginatto combined for 33 of Western's 50 first half points as Reginatto hit four of his five treys in a span of just five minutes for 12 of the 26 points during the decisive run. Assie started the ball rolling with eight of the first 11 points in the stretch. It was 50-29 in Western's favor at intermission.
Wesleyan did cut the 21-point halftime margin to as few as 12 points in the second half (75-63) with four minutes to play but Western hit seven of eight free throws in the final two minutes to seal the win.
