Ursinus 124, Rhode Island College 117

HARTFORD, Conn. — McGarvey helps Ursinus outlast Rhode Island 124-117

Mike McGarvey (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Penn Charter) scored 15 of his game- and career-high 38 points in the third overtime to lead Ursinus over Rhode Island 124-117 in the second game of the Trinity Tip-Off Classic on Saturday.
McGarvey was near perfect in the final overtime, going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and hitting 3-for-3 from the floor to help the Bears (1-1) outscore the Anchormen (0-1) 17-10 and record their first victory of the season in dramatic fashion.
Ursinus knocked down 18 three-pointers, setting a new Centennial Conference record for three-point field goals in a game and breaking a program for most points in a game with 124. The record- breaking day also saw a career-high 32 points and 12 rebounds from Brian McEvily (Interlaken, NJ/Red Bank Regional).
Rhode Island’s Andre Daley recorded a team-high 34 points, while Kamari Williams scored 32 points and dished out a game-high 14 assists.
In the final overtime, McGarvey hit a three pointer on a pass from Ted Piotrowicz (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Archbishop Carroll) to take the lead for good. From here it was all McGarvey, connecting on a jumper for a 114-111 lead with 1:55 left to play.
Daley put two points on the board, but McGarvey made two free throws to keep the Anchormen three points away. McGarvey scored the next eight points for the Bears in the final 1:05, including four from the charity-stripe to cap a 12-for-12 day at the line.
With eights seconds remaining in regulation, Daley hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Combining for 13 three-pointers, McEvily and McGarvey hit back-to-back treys to take a 93-89 lead in the first five minutes of overtime. Ursinus jumped out to a six-point lead at 96-90, but Daley hit two free throws and a three pointer to pull within one. Rhode Island relied on their long-range shooting and Williams drained one from behind the arc with 39 seconds left for a second overtime period.
The Anchormen held the lead throughout the next five minutes, until Piotrowicz hit his only two free throws of the game for a 107-106 edge with 31 seconds left. At the line with two seconds on the clock, John Weir missed one of two free throws to send the game into a third and final period.
The Bears took a commanding 34-21 lead in the first half, maintaining a double-digit until the Anchormen used a 13-1 run in the final four minutes to head into halftime tied for the first out of six times at 45-45.
Ursinus regained a 10-point lead, thanks to a three pointer by McEvily at the 9:34 mark to make it 69-59. Rhode Island mimicked its first-half performance and erased an eight-point deficit in five minutes, hitting three treys in a minute, 40 seconds to begin the extra periods.
Bret Jenkins (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Matt Fabian (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) added 11 points for the Bears.
Ursinus returns to action on Tuesday at Eastern. Game time is 7 p.m.
