Both teams played nip-and-tuck through the first half, as Wheaton and Lewis & Clark witnessed 10 lead changes and six ties. The Pioneers held the biggest lead of the opening stanza with 6:26 to play, when freshman Laura Snider (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty) knocked down a three-point basket for a 13-10 edge. Wheaton tied the contest at 13 and eventually trailed 15-14 with just under five minutes to play. A Mary Flaherty (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester) jumper gave the Lyons a 16-15 lead with 4:31 to go and from that point forward both squads traded baskets the rest of the half, with Wheaton taking a 22-21 advantage into the break.
In the second half, Lewis & Clark reeled off five straight points to take a 26-22 lead, but Flaherty's three followed by a Deverie Stover (Kingston, NY/Hawthorne Valley School) jump shot put Wheaton back on top at 27-26 with 17:57 remaining. The lead proved to be short-lived, as Snider drained her second three of the half that gave the Pioneers a lead that was not relinquished. The Lyons trailed 44-40 to stay within striking distance with 8:42 on the clock, but the hosts went on a 9-2 run over a three-minute span to put the game out of reach.
Wheaton limited Lewis & Clark to 9-of-29 (.310) shooting from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, but the hosts erupted for 12-of-24 (.500) in the second half behind a trio of three-pointer buckets. The Pioneers also hit 17-of-22 (.773) free throws in the second period, while holding Wheaton to 10-of-33 (.303) from the floor.
Sophomore Samara Audet (Derry, NH/Trinity) led the Lyons in scoring with 12 points (5-8 FG), while classmate Kim McCormack (Milton, MA/Milton) crashed the boards with a team-high 11 rebounds. Flaherty and Stover registered nine points apiece in the loss.
Leading Lewis & Clark was freshman Allison Farr (Lakeport, CA/Clear Lake), who totaled 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to record her first career double-double. Sophomore Sarah Moon (Portland, OR/Westview) contributed a game-high tying 15 points (5-8 FG, 5-6 FT), while Snider rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 points (4-9 3-pt FG).
Wheaton looks to even its record in day two of the Bon Appetit Classic tomorrow, when the Lyons take on Willamette at 1:00 p.m. Lewis & Clark will play Menlo at 3:00 p.m.
