LeTourneau 100, Rhema Bible 78

WAXAHACHIE, Tx. — The LeTourneau University men’s basketball team garnered its first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon against Rhema Bible College in the Southwest Assemblies of God Pepsi Classic, 100-78.
YellowJacket (1-1) senior shooting guard Julius McClaskey set a new school record by hitting on 6-of-6 shots from behind the three-point line en route to a game-high 26 points. As a team, the ‘Jackets hit on 14-of-27 three-point attempts, a .519 clip. In addition to McClaskey, three other players made two trifectas; Brandon Morris, Jeremiah Bastian and Joseph Solomon.
Rhema Bible (0-3) had three players score in double figures and were led by Reamer’s 23 points. As a team, RBC shot 52.7 percent from the floor and out rebounded the ‘Jackets 42-25.
The key to the game according to LETU head coach Bernie Balikian was the YellowJackets’ pressure defense. LeTourneau forced RBC into 40 turnovers and the ‘Jackets led by as many as 36 points in the second half. McClaskey led LeTourneau with five of the team’s 17 steals. Thirteen players made appearances for LETU.
Junior Travis Bankett was the only other YellowJacket to score in double figures. Bankett tallied a career-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Freshman point guard Jonathan Collins played a solid floor game with six points, five assists, two steals and no turnovers.
LeTourneau shot 54.7 percent from the floor and went 16-of-21 from the foul line. The team is off until Saturday at Schreiner University at 7:30. This will be the first American Southwest Conference game of the season and can be heard on the internet at www.tsrnsports.com.
