Sean Newton scored 18 points to lead Greensboro College to an 81-74 win over Piedmont College at Hanes Gym on Saturday.
The Pride led 34-33 at halftime. GC, however, broke the game open with a hot-shooting second half. Greensboro hit 16-32 shots in the final 20 minutes. The home team led by as many as 12 points in the period.
Rodney Blackstock chipped in with 17 points and added 12 rebounds for GC. Justin Battle added 10 boards for Greensboro, which out-rebounded the Lions, 49-35.
For Piedmont (0-2) Jake Baldwin led four players in double figures with 17 points.
With the win, Coach Rusty LaRue's club starts the year 2-0 for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign. GC was the only club to go unbeaten in the Corutyard/USA South- GSAC Classic.
