Baldwin-Wallace 59, Gettysburg 57

— Sophomore forward Tori Davis (Elyria/ Open Door) stole an inbound pass and scored a layup at the buzzer as the Baldwin-Wallace College men’s basketball team defeated host Gettysburg College, 59-57, in the championship game of the Days Inn Tournament in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Yellow Jackets also beat the University of Mary Washington (Va.), 64-57, in the first round yesterday.

With the score tied at 57-all and Gettysburg inbounding the ball with 2.1 seconds remaining, Tori Davis was guarding the inbound play at the B-W end of the court. A Gettysburg player, who was trying to throw a length of the court pass, was intercepted by Tori Davis, who then turned and scored the winning basket.

B-W, now 2-0 and picked to win the Ohio Athletic Conference title this year, led by as many as 13 points in the first half at 19-6 with 10:33 left when senior point guard Tom Harrington (North Royalton/ Parma Heights Holy Name) canned a jump shot. Then Gettysburg went on a 13-0 run to tie the score at 19-19. After B-W built another six point lead, Gettysburg closed out the half on a 6-0 run to tie it at 27-27 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets led by as many as seven points at 45-38 at the 10:45 mark when Thad Davis scored on a jumper. Gettysburg then went on a 16-7 run to take a brief three-point lead at 53-50. Thad Davis then scored the next six points and Tori Davis added a foul shot to give B-W a 57-53 lead with 1:37 left before Gettysburg came back to tie the score at 57-all when senior center David Glaser scored on a layup with 16.1 seconds left. Thad set up the heroics by Tori Davis.

Thad Davis led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points and 11 rebounds. With his 15 points tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,366 career points and is 12th on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list. In addition, Tori Davis had 12 points and Harrington, who was named as the tourney MVP, had 11 markers.

For Gettysburg, now 1-1 overall, Glasser led the Bullets with 14 points.

B-W will back in action on Tuesday, November 23, when it hosts Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University in its home opener at 7:30 p.m. in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
