Sophomore forward Matt Jacobson scored on a layup with seven seconds remaining and junior center Reggie Magnusson blocked a shot in the last three seconds to help the Centre College men's basketball team defeat Rust College 60-59, Saturday, Nov. 20, in Sewanee, Tenn.
The game was played as part of the Lon Varnell Classic, hosted by the University of the South.
Magnusson scored a game-high 25 points on 9 of 19 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds to help the Colonels improve to 2-0 on the year.
Freshman guard Matt Nestheide scored in double figures for the second straight game, posting 13 points and three steals.
Clifton Randall led Rust notching 12 points and six rebounds. Brandon Rhodes tallied eight points and seven rebounds in the loss. Russ falls to 1-1 on the year.
Centre stuggled in the first half for the second straight game shooting only 31% on nine of 29 shooting from the floor, going into the halftime down 29-28. However, like the day before, they were red-hot in the second half knocking down 13 of 21 shots to shoot 61.9 percent.
The Colonels finished the game shooting 44% (22-50), while Rust shot 41.5% on 22 of 53 shooting.
Centre will next travel to Maryville, Tenn. to play Maryville College, Tuesday, Nov. 23. The game is set to start at 8 p.m.
