St. Mary's (Md.) 85, Wesley 71

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD — The St. Mary's College men's basketball team shot 68.4 percent from the field in posting an 85-71 non-conference victory over Wesley College on Friday evening. Senior forward Jeffrey Turner (Washington DC/Forestville) led the Seahawks with a game-high tying 21 points, while junior guard Ben Stewart (Bel Air, MD/Bel Air) added 20 points, with 18 points coming from a perfect 6-for-6 performance from behind the arc.

The Seahawks built an early 11-8 lead after Stewart hit his second three-pointer of the contest. The Seahawks extended their first half lead to 14 points at 35-21 just before halftime with two free throws by Turner. Wesley (0-1) ended the final 3:36 of the half with a 16-10 advantage to reduce the halftime deficit to 44-37.

The Wolverines scored on a three-pointer from junior forward Nick Minor (Gambrills, MD/Anne Arundel) to pull within four, but the Seahawks answered with a 13-0 run over the next five minutes, capped again by two free throws from Turner. Wesley would not be able to respond and the Seahawks cruised to the 14 point victory, holding a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the contest.

Minor paced the Wolverines with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Senior guard Pat Woods (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) added 14 points and two steals. The Wolverines shot 23-for-50 from the field for 46.0 percent and were 18-25 from the free throw line.

Turner led the Seahawks with 21 points and three steals. Stewart added 20 points on 6-for-7 shooting, including the 6-for-6 from behind the arc. Freshman Kyle Sullivan (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) added 13 points and a team-high six rebounds, while freshman T.J. Jordan added 11 points before fouling out of his first collegiate contest. Sophomore point guard Dan Engelstad (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) contributed with a game-high 11 assists on the evening.

The Seahawks connected on 26-of-38 shot attempts for 68.4 percent, including an astonishing 15-of-19 from behind the arc. They also connected on 18-25 free throw attempts in the contest.

St. Mary's College (1-0) will return to action on Sunday, November 21, when they travel to Averett College for a non-conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
