Sophomore forward DEVIN DAVIS (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional), in his first game at New Jersey City University had a spectacular debut with 31 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and five blocks to lead NJCU to a 79-72 victory over New York City College of Technology in the opening round of the 2004 NJCU Gothic Knight Tip-Off Tournament.
NJCU (1-0) shot 47.0 percent from the floor (31-66), including 59.4 percent in the second period (19-of-32) to advance to Saturday’s championship game. The Knights will face Baruch College, 68-42 winners over Arcadia University, tomorrow at 8pm for the title. NJCU has won the last two championships in its own tournament. City Tech (0-1) will face Arcadia in the 3pm consolation game. This was the first-ever meeting between NJCU and City Tech in men’s basketball.
Davis shot 14-of-18 (.778) from the floor, and scored 22 of his 31 in the second half, while shooting (10-of-12). Davis, a transfer from Brookdale Community College, played 33 minutes in his NJCU debut. He had five offensive rebounds.
Senior co-captain JAVIER RODRIGUEZ (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) notched 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in 32 minutes, including 6-of-8 from the line (6-of-6 first half). Sophomore power forward ABRAHAM WILLIAMS (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) added 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
City Tech was paced by senior forward JASON SENIOR (Brooklyn, NY/Satellite Academy), who scored 23 points (11-of-18) and had five rebounds, yet gave away eight turnovers.
Senior center SHACUN MALAVE (Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton), a pre-season Second-Team All-America pick by d3hoops.com and Street & Smith magazine, finished with 16 points (7-of-12), seven rebounds, six steals, and four blocks.
He was not a factor in the first half and did not score in the opening period, while being charged with three fouls. He picked up his fourth foul with 17:15 remaining in the second period.
Amazingly, he did not foul out while playing 32 minutes, and scored 13 of his 16 points after picking up his fourth foul.
Junior forward DANUL CABBAGESTALK (Brooklyn, NY/John Adams) chalked up 11 points (3-of-5) and hauled down seven rebounds (five offensive).
The two teams combined for 59 turnovers and shot 6-for-30 from three-point range. City Tech, gave away 30 turnovers, which led directly to 36 NJCU points. City Tech shot 42.6 percent overall (29-of-68) and 50 percent (18-of-36) in the second period.
NJCU led 38-25 at the half, and maintained an advantage of as many as 14 at 11:16 of the second half. A lay-up by Cabbagestalk trimmed the NJCU lead to 73-69 with 1:56 remaining, before a steal by Rodriguez and subsequent Davis fast-break dunk increased the lead to six and ended any hope for a Yellow Jacket rally.
