The Spartans started off slowly as they trailed 9-1 in the opening minutes of the game. The Spartans eventually tied the game at nine and then the teams exchanged baskets for a six minute stretch. The green and white began to build an advantage late in the half as the lead reached double figures before the end of the stanza as the Spartans took a 60-47 lead into the half. The Spartans shot 51.1% from the field in the first half including a 7-for-13 performance from beyond the arc.
The second half saw the Mounties fall under a blitzkreig from the Spartan offense. Mt. Aloysius cut the Spartan lead to 11 but the Spartans responded with a seven point spurt that pushed the lead to 18 at 84-66. The lead would not fall below 15 the rest of the way as York outscored Mt. Aloysius 63-33 in the second half.
The Spartans received a number of outstanding performances as all 14 Spartan players saw action and scored at least two points in the game. Freshman Chad McGowan (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) drained a team-high 20 points in his collegiate debut. McGowan was 7-14 from the field, 1-2 from three, and 5-5 from the free throw line. Three Spartans recorded double-doubles in the win led by junior Brian Singer (York, PA/Eastern York) as the center had 14 points and 14 rebounds in just 17 minutes of play. Junior Paddy Lee (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) added 15 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes of action while senior Ben Seibert (Hanover, PA/Southwestern) tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Josh Wurtz (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) contributed 16 points and five rebounds including a 4-of-5 performance from beyond the arc. Junior Kenny Fass (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) was the sixth Spartan in double figures with 12 points while he added four assists and two steals.
Mt. Aloysius was led by Deron Knox as he tallied 24 points while he also had five rebounds and two steals. Justin Ohler added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds while Roman Mims had 12 points and six rebounds. Aaron Melius was the fourth Mountie in double figures with 10 points in addition to six rebounds.
York finished the game shooting 46.9% from the floor but 52.4% from three. The Spartans also converted 22-of-26 from the charity stripe, good for a 84.6% conversion percentage. Mt. Aloysius shot just 31.1% from the floor for the game including just 26.5% from downtown. The Spartans held a significant 74-49 advantage on the glass as York had 30 offensive rebounds compared to just 25 defensive rebounds for the Mounties.
The Spartans advance to face the host Albright College Lions in the championship game of the tournament. The game tips off at 8:00 pm at Bollman Center in Reading. The last tournament championship for the Spartans came last January 4 when the green and white beat Widener 67-65 in the championship game of the White Rose City championship game.
