The Saints would jump out to an early lead in the first three minutes of the game, but then quickly saw a nine point deficit between them and their opponents. After trailing 15-6 at the 13:00 minute mark, Maryville slowly started to fight their way back and cut Transylvania's lead to one point with 3:01 remaining in the half.
Senior Marcus Henderson would hit two three-point shots and a layup, along with a good free throw by junior Tim Elwell in the final 1:34 of the half to give the Saints an eight point advantage going into halftime.
Maryville would maintain their lead for the first seven minutes of the second half, until Transylvania's Joey Searle hit a jumper to put his squad up 45-44. The two teams would trade the lead four more times before the final buzzer sounded.
The Saints took over the lead at 2:26 and led by three points with 1:42 remaining, but Transylvania's Nate Valentine would hit a trey to tie the game at 62-62 with just 29 seconds on the clock. Maryville would have one final shot with two seconds remaining, after junior Matt Regan rebounded a missed free throw shot by Valentine. Senior Andrew Hulbert would take the Saints final shot, but Transylvania's Robert Pendleton rebounded the miss and found teammate Matt Finke, who sank the shot at the buzzer to give his team the victory.
Hulbert was one of only two Saints players to finish in double figures. He recorded 12 points, three rebounds and three assists, while shooting 5-8 (.625) from the field and 2-2 (1.000) from the charity stripe. Junior Ryan Klein led Maryville with a team-high 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. He shot 4-9 (.444) from the floor and a perfect 4-4 (1.000) from the free throw line.
Regan also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and added eight points on 3-4 (.750) shooting from the field and 2-2 (1.000) from the line. Henderson led Maryville with two three-point field goals. He would finish with eight points and two assists for the game, while freshman Casey Holland added five rebounds, three points and one assist.
Transylvania had four players score in double digits. Bryan Howard led the way with a double-double, including 14 points and 11 rebounds. Finke finished with a game-high 15 points, while Valentine and Searle added 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Saints, who now stand at 0-1, will return to action tomorrow when they take on D3hoops.com Preseason #3, Hanover College at 3:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
