DePauw 74, Randolph-Macon 72

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — DePauw opened the 2004-05 campaign with a 74-72 win over 23rd-ranked Randolph-Macon in the opening game of the Illinois Wesleyan Tipoff Tournament. The Tigers face Illinois Wesleyan at 8 p.m. CST in the tournament championship game. The Titans defeated Aurora, 70-68 in tonight's second game.

The Tigers trailed 40-37 at halftime and fell behind by as many as seven early in the second half. Still trailing 53-46, DePauw put together an 11-2 run on back-to-back three-pointers by Reid Sakel and Austin Brown, a three-point play from Brown and a jumper by Alex Stewart to take a 57-55 lead with 10:24 remaining.

Stewart hit a jumper with 35 seconds left to give DePauw a 70-66 lead and the Yellow Jackets' Justin Wansley scored with 23 seconds remaining to cut the margin to two. Sakel nailed two free throws with 18 seconds left to push the advantage to 72-68 before Adam Krovic scored a layup with five seconds left to make it 72-70. Sakel again buried two charity tosses with four seconds remaining to seal the win. Justin Moyer added a tip-in at the buzzer for the final two-point margin.

Stewart led DePauw with 16 followed by Steve Schott with 15. Brown added 12 and Sakel scored 10. Patrick Gill and Andrew Baker led Randolph-Macon with 13 apiece followed by Wansley and Philip Hawley with 12 each and Moyer with 10.

The Tigers shot 45 percent from the floor, while the Yellow Jackets connected on 51 percent. DePauw held a 34-31 advantage on the boards led by Brian Oilar's seven. Wansley and Baker had five each for Randolph-Macon.
