Albion 109, Marygrove 69

ALBION, Mich. — Reported by Jake Lloyd, '07
Albion College sports information student assistant

The Albion College men's basketball team opened its season in rather easy fashion Friday, Nov. 19 in the second semifinal of the Greater Albion Chamber of Commerce Tip-off Classic, rolling past Marygrove College of Detroit 109-69 at Kresge Gymnasium.

Albion ran out to a 10-0 lead in the opening three minutes and never looked back. Marygrove hung around for the first seven minutes, trailing just 16-8 at the 12:44 mark, but the Britons closed out the half on a 33-7 run to realistically put the Mustangs away at halftime with their 49-15 advantage.

Sophomore guard Zak Silas led the Britons with a career-high 20 points, including four three-pointers. Junior forward Brandon Crawford added 12 points in just 15 minutes of action, senior forward Travis DePree registered a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and first-year player Jim Cash, playing in his first collegiate game, scored 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting.

The Britons dominated the Mustangs on the boards, as they held a 58-26 advantage and grabbed 19 offensive rebounds. This translated into 46 second-chance points compared to 14 for the Mustangs.

Albion got contributions from everybody, as all 14 active players played and scored. The Britons got 65 bench points, and nobody played more than 20 minutes. So they will be well rested for Saturday's final against Ohio Wesleyan College.

Ohio Wesleyan defeated Rochester College, 65-61, in the first semifinal.

Not everything went smoothly for the Britons. They committed 28 turnovers which translated into 21 points for the Mustangs.

But Albion's half-court defense was rock solid, as it forced Marygrove into 28.4 percent shooting and 18.5 percent shooting in the first half.

Albion also shot lights out from the field, as it shot 61.8 percent for the game. In the second half Albion shot 74.2 percent and missed just eight of 31 field goals. The Britons were especially hot from beyond the three-point arc, where they shot 14-of-21 for the game, 66.7 percent.

Marygrove was led by Will Bullard's 14 points. Also scoring in double figures were Myles Remson with 11 and Dominique Howell with 10.
