Adrian 74, Bethany 72

ERIE, Pa. — The Adrian College men's basketball team defeated Bethany, WV on Friday night 74-72. AC moves to 1-0 on the year, while the Bison's, who were picked to win the President's Athletic Conference this year, fall to 0-1. The Bulldogs face tournament host Penn State Behrend on Saturday in the championship game at 3 p.m.

AC trailed 13-0 right out of the blocks, but slowly recovered in the end of the first half to pull within nine, trailing 41-32. AC shot a decent 43 percent clip in the half, but the Bison's were smoking, shooting 54 percent, including 40 percent from downtown.

AC chipped away at the lead for most of the second half and tied the contest up at 72 on Billy Collins Jr.'s jumper with :21 left in the contest. AC then played outstanding defense and Brian Schaefer came up with a huge steal with :4 to go and was fouled sending the All-American hopeful to line. Schaefer sank both tries and AC got a steal from Jeff Nokovich to end the game.

For the game, AC was led by Schaefer with 30 points on 10-of-21 shooting, including 4-of-8 from three point range. Collins Jr. added 14 points, while Mike Lewis, fresh off a football season, tossed in nine points and grabbed a team leading five rebounds. Anthony Thornton added seven points off the bench for AC.
