Rochester 75, St. John Fisher 66

ROCHESTER, NY — Seth Hauben scored 23 points and grabbed 17 rebounds while Andy Larkin added 17 points as the University of Rochester defeated St. John Fisher College, 75-66, in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs at the Palestra here tonight.

The Yellowjackets (25-1) move into the East/Northeast Sectionals against Keene State College of New Hampshire. The second game of the Sectionals pairs SUNY Brockport against defending national champion Williams College. A site for the sectionals will be announced by the Division III Men’s Basketball Committee on March 7.

Jeff Sidney and Matt Morley led the Cardinals with 15 points apiece. Nick Bennett scored 13 , Sean O’Brien had 12, and Raymie Auman scored 10. Fisher, which defeated Hamilton, 90-83, on Thursday, finished 22-7.

Hauben scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in the first half as Rochester opened a 34-18 lead. He hit two jumpers and made a free throw to key a 17-3 run over six minutes. Rochester led, 30-15, with 4:15 to play. The Yellowjackets got three point goals from Brendan McAllister and Gabe Perez in the spurt.

“We like to establish our inside game early,” Hauben said. “When we can wear them down on defense, it tires them out on offense.”

The Cardinals couldn’t cut into the double digit lead but managed to shorten the game in the second half with three-point shots, then sending Rochester to the foul line. The tactic worked six weeks ago in the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament. This time, Rochester hit 30 of 38 from the line, 12 in the last 2:05.

“We tried to double down on (Hauben) a little more,” said St. John Fisher coach Rob Kornaker. “He’s just too strong and gets the ball in too deep.”
