After the Byers' layup the Bears had three chances at a game-winner but were unable to connect.
Dennis Stanton led Ursinus (16-11) with a game-high 43 points including 10-of-18 three-pointers, tying his own school and Conference record. Mike McGarvey added 15 points, five assists and five steals.
Evan Harlor added 15 points and eight assists for the Flying Dutchmen (15-12) who will advance to the semifinal round.
Ursinus led by as many 13 points and led 36-26 with 5:33 remaining in the first half. But Lebanon Valley exploded on a 16-2 run to take a 42-38 lead into the locker room.
LVC extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second half and took a 52-42 lead on Harlor's three less than three minutes in.
Ursinus countered when Stanton scored 10 points in a 15-2 run as the Bears took a 57-54 lead at the 14:14 mark.
The teams exchanged the lead six time over the next 10 minutes with Ursinus leading by as many as five points and the Dutchmen holding a lead of three.
A pair of free throws by Stanton gave Ursinus a 79-76 lead with 3:57 left in the game.
Byers quickly answered with a three-pointer and converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give LVC an 82-79 cushion with just over two minutes remaining.
Matt Fabian connected on a pair of free throws to pull the Bears to within one. After Jimmy Curran missed the front end of a one-and-one, Stanton got the rebound, drove the length of the floor and gave Ursinus 83-82 lead at the 1:48 mark.
The Bears missed a pair of layups that would have extended their lead and Byers drove the left side and found an opening for what turned out to be the game-winner.
Stanton, Bret Jenkins (six assists, three steals) and McGarvey each had looks in the final seconds but were unable to convert in heavy traffic under the basket.
The loss means an end to the most successful individual season in the history of Ursinus College and the Centennial Conference. Stanton, who has led the NCAA in scoring since the first rankings, finished with 879 points in 27 games for a 32.6 per game average - both (total points and average) Ursinus and Conference records. The Centennial Conference Player of the Year, Stanton is a finalist for the Jostens Trophy given annually to the Division III Player of the Year. He finishes his career as the all-time leading scorer in Centennial Conference history with 1,903 points.
