Trailing 66-65 with 1:08 to play, Josean Vega (JR, Pawtucket, RI/Saint Raphael's HS) drove the left baseline and scored what proved to be the game-winning layup. The Chargers (19-8) missed their final two shots with a Wheaton turnover sandwiched in the middle.
The first half had three ties, the last of which was broken when Tyler Fournier (FR, Westbrook, ME/Westbrook HS) and Tyler Putnam (SO, Hodgdon, ME/Hodgdon HS) converted back-to-back buckets to give the Chargers a 17-13 advantage midway through the period. Colby-Sawyer extended the margin to nine (26-17, 31-22) twice in the opening 20 minutes and took a 35-29 lead into the break.
Wheaton's Richard Henninger (SR, Duxbury, MA/Duxbury HS) brought his team within a point (35-34) on a free throw, layup, and a dunk to start the final stanza, and the Chargers slowly stretched the margin to nine (53-44) once again, with just under 12 minutes to play.
The Lyons chipped away at the deficit and took their first lead (59-58) since eight minutes into the game when Sean Kelly (SO, Providence, RI/Wheeler School) drained a deep 3-pointer with 6:05 on the clock. The teams then traded the next four buckets, and one-point leads, as Wheaton pulled ahead, 63-62. Following a layup by Vega, Chris Condon (JR, Reading, MA/Reading Memorial HS) hit two free throws and Andrew St. Clair (SO, Pittsfield, ME/Maine Central Institute) converted a layup to give Colby-Sawyer its final edge (66-65) and points of the night.
Vega led five Wheaton players in double figures with 14 points, while teammate Scott Mahan (SR, Bridgewater, MA/Cardinal Spellman HS) had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Frankie Whall (SR, Roslindale, MA/Cheshire Academy) matched Mahan's dozen points as Henninger and Kelly chipped in 11 points apiece to the victory.
St. Clair went 8-for-14 from the field and paced the Chargers with 18 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Condon chipped in 11 points and Collin Bray (SO, Brookline, MA/New Hampton (NH) Prep) added 11 points and seven assists for Colby-Sawyer, which came up one triumph short of its fourth consecutive 20-win season.
