University of New England 67, Gordon 63

BIDDEFORD, Maine — BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Freshman forward Nick Farynaz (Gray, Maine) scored seven points during 16-6 run to start the second half as the University of New England overcame a 34-31 halftime deficit on its way to a 67-63 victory over Gordon College.

The first half was close throughout, but the Fighting Scots were able to take a slim three-point advantage, thanks in part to 48.3 percent (14 of 29) shooting from the field.

Farynaz and senior Brandon Berthiaume (Springfield, Mass.) combined for 11 points during UNE's spurt to start the second half that gave it a 47-40 lead with 11:24 to play.

Gordon got as close as three (63-60) on a pair of free throws at the by senior Ryan Smith (Hamilton, Mass.) at the 1:36 mark, but the Nor'easters refused to wilt in the closing stages.

Berthiaume finished with a game-high 16 points for the Nor'easters (5-12, 3-5 CCC), who defeated Gordon for the first time in their last four meetings. Farynaz added 15 points, including a 7-for-8 performance at the free throw line, and sophomore Matt McManus (Cumberland, R.I.) chipped in with 13 points.

Smith and sophomore Alex Yeats (McLean, Va.) tallied 14 points apiece for the Fighting Scots (8-10, 5-4). Senior Hayes Murray (West Simsbury, Conn.) scored 11.

UNE will be looking for its third straight win on Tuesday in a road date with Endicott College.
