TO WIN AGAINST TUFTS
Sophomore forward Tyler Rhoten (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored a game-high 26 points and added five rebounds to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 74-52 win over the visiting Tufts University Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men’s basketball action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity, ranked No. 11 in the nation, improves to 17-1 overall and 5-1 in the NESCAC with their third straight win, while the Jumbos drop to 5-13 overall and 1-4 in the league with their second loss in as many days.
Both offenses struggled early, as Tufts held an 8-6 lead with 12 minutes remaining, before the Bantams went on a 26-4 run to go into halftime with a sizable, 34-12 advantage. The Trinity defense held Tufts to just three field goals in 18 attempts over the first 20 minutes, and forced 16 Jumbo turnovers. Rhoten scored 12 of his points in the first half.
Trinity senior tri-captain guard Shaun Smyth (Manchester, Conn.) had 14 points and four steals, while junior tri-captain guard John Halas (White Plains, N.Y.) added 10 points and six boards, and junior center Craig Coupe (Niskayuna, N.Y.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Senior forward Reggie Stovell (Washington, D.C.) paced Tufts with 13 points and seven boards, and senior co-captain forward Deyvehn East (Greenfield, Mass.) added 10 points.
