WNEC went on a 7-0 run with 12:04 remaining in the first half to go ahead 16-11. During the run, WNEC took its second and lasting lead at 12-11 on a jump shot by senior Gerry Toney (West Hartford, CT). Toney scored 10 points in the game, one of four WNEC players to score in double figures.
Suffolk senior Eric Jenkins (Bristol, CT) netted nine points in the first half, including 3-of-3 free throw shooting. Jenkins ended the game with 12 points.
Neil Simard (Arlington, MA) grabbed six of his nine rebounds in the first half for Suffolk. Marc Borghesi (Torrington, CT) and John Murphy (North Reading, MA) each had two steals in the first half for the Rams.
WNEC junior Anthony Charbatji (Attleboro, MA) scored 10 points in the first half on 2-of-4 shooting from the three-point arc, including one three-pointer to end the half and put the Golden Bears up 31-26. Charbatji finished the game with 20 points.
In the second half, Suffolk junior Chris Tighe (Easton, MA) went on a scoring tear, netting 15 points in a seven minute stretch, including 3 three-pointers. Tighe scored all 17 of his points in the second half.
In a game riddled with fouls, Western New England scored 22 of its points from the free-throw line while Suffolk netted 19 points from the charity stripe.
Suffolk falls to 6-10 on the season and 4-5 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. Western New England College improves to 8-9 and 6-4 in the GNAC. Suffolk takes the court again on Tuesday in a GNAC game at Johnson and Wales University.
