KEAN CRUISES PAST NJCU, 86-49, IN NJAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Kean University opened the game on a 15-0 run and never looked back, as the Cougars defeated New Jersey City University, 86-49, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game played Saturday afternoon at the D’Angola Gymnasium.
Kean has won four of its last five games, and improves to 14-6 and 4-4 in the NJAC. NJCU (5-11, 0-7) has lost three straight.
Senior forward Shervon James (Brooklyn, NY/William E. Grady) led the way for the Cougars with 23 points, 18 rebounds, five blocks, and four steals on a night where she tallied the 1000th point of her career with a lay-up at 12:40 of the first half, a bucket that made the lead 21-5. She entered the game with 994 career points. In 29 minutes, she hit 11-of-18 shots.
NJCU’s top player was freshman forward DAR-NESHIA JOYNER (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) with 10 points and seven rebounds. Freshman center BRITTNEY McCAA (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) recorded eight points and seven offensive rebounds. Sophomore guard SHARNICE JACKSON (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) notched six points and four assists in 16 minutes but committed six turnovers.
Three others reached double figures for Kean. Junior guard Missy Magyar (Iselin, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) had 13 points (5-of-11, 3-of-7 3 FG) and six assists. Senior guard Janae Brumby (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) added 13 points (6-of-14), five assists, and five steals in 28 minutes. Sophomore guard Tahnisha Barge (Camden, NJ/Camden)chipped in 10 points (4-of-7) and five assists.
Also for the Cougars, freshman center Shannon Harrison (Plainfield, NJ/St. Patrick) finished with nine points (4-of-9), nine rebounds (six offensive) and three steals. Freshman forward Chi Clark (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) had five assists, five rebounds, and six points.
Kean was without the services of second leading scorer Kellie Rice (Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro).
The Cougars shot .456 for the game (36-of-79) and .500 in the second half (20-of-40), while NJCU struggled, hitting .316 (18-of-57). The Knights were better in the second half (.433) after making just .185 of their first period attempts.
Kean out-rebounded NJCU, 54-38. The Cougars outscored NJCU in the paint, 54-14, and took advantage of 30 Gothic Knight turnovers with a 32-13 edge in points off miscues.
NJCU returns to action on Monday, February 02 at 6pm when the Knights visit William Paterson University, the first place team in the NJAC Blue Division, in a conference game in Wayne, NJ. That game is a make-up of a January 28 snowout.
