NEWPORT NEWS, VA – CNU’s men’s basketball team dropped a 55-49 decision at home to Methodist Saturday afternoon.
The Captains came out cold in the first half before cutting into the lead and trailing 25-18. MC shot just 9-of-29 (31%) from the field and 7-of-15 (47%) on three-point attempts. The Monarchs held the Captains to just 8-of-27 (30%) shooting from the floor, 1-of-12 (8%) on three’s and 1-of-3 (33%) from the charity stripe.
In the second half, CNU hit key shots early and eventually took the lead 30-28 with 14:51 left in the game. After trading buckets, the Captains took a three point lead, 37-34 with 10:35 left in the ball game. The Monarchs then took the lead 39-37 with 9:31 left in the game. CNU was held without a field goal in the final 5:31 left in the ball game.
In the second half, MC shot 12-of-33 (36%) from the field, 1-of-7 (14%) on three’s and 5-of-9 (56%) from the free throw line. The Captains finished the half 10-of-29 (35%) from the free throw line, 4-of-13 (31%) on three’s and 7-of-11 (64%) from the free throw line.
For the game, MC finished 21-of-62 (34%) from the floor, 8-of-22 (36%) on three’s and 5-of-9 (56%) from the charity stripe. CNU finished 18-of-56 (32%) from the floor, 5-of-25 (20%) on three’s and 8-of-14 (57%) from the charity stripe.
The Monarchs were led by Seth Thomas with 13 points and nine rebounds. Eugene Grant added 10 points and Sam Porter finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Jeremy Romeo led the Captains with 13 points. Mark Hepner added 13 rebounds.
Methodist improves to 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the USA South. CNU drops to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the USA South.
The Captains are back in action tomorrow as they host Greensboro with tip-off set for 4 pm.
