Carroll is coming off a road win at Illinois College last night (85-64) while Grinnell got back on the winning track after defeating Beloit, 155-138. Jason Scheper led his team with 22 points against the Blue Boys, while Ben Hickethier added 19.
Meanwhile, the Darby faithful saw a monster performance by Steve Wood ‘04 who poured in 55 points in only 21 minutes of play. Beloit’s Josh Hinz matched Wood’s output-- in 36 minutes -- but the Pioneers had five other players in doublefigures, compared to two for the Bucs. Grinnell hit 15 threes and 36 freethrows and shot 47.7% from the field (52 of 109).
Eric Walsh scored 20 in 15 minutes, while Toby Carlson ‘06 had some athletic finishes on his way to 18. Steve Nordlund ‘04 added 15 points, Nick Malinowski ‘04 had 14 and Patrick Choquette ‘04 had 12 and nine rebounds.
Wood increased his scoring average to 29.7 points per game and now only needs 89 points to match the career scoring record of 2,229 held by Jeff Clement ‘99. With seven regular-season games to go, he needs to average 12.9 ppg to surpass Clement. Malinowski could hit a career milestone of 1,000 points with 15 in today’s contest.
