Wilkes 65, Drew 49

Madison, NJ — Wilkes University earned a convincing 65-49 Freedom Conference men’s basketball win at Drew University on Thursday night. The win improves the Colonels to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Rangers slip to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

The Colonels held Drew to their second lowest point total this season. They also limited the Rangers to a mere 29.1 percent shooting from the field in the contest. Wilkes enjoyed a hot shooting night from three-point range, canning 11-of-21 long-range attempts.

Leading 13-7 early in the game, Wilkes put together a 12-2 run to assume a 25-9 lead with 4:22 left in the opening stanza. Mike Morgan keyed the Colonels spurt. After John Yanniello hit one-of-two free throws, Morgan cashed in a three-pointer to give Wilkes a 17-7 lead.

A basket by the Rangers Nick Elmo would close the gap to 17-9. But, Morgan hit two more three-pointers to provide the Colonels with a 23-9 lead. A jumper by John Sclafani would push the lead to 25-9 and the Rangers never got within single digits again.

Wilkes held a 29-17 lead following a basket by Drew’s Brad Greenman to begin the second half. Once again, the Colonels responded with a major run, outscoring the Rangers 13-2 over the next five minutes to put the game away. Dan Adams scored inside and Mike Constantine drilled a three-pointer to up the Colonels advantage to 34-17. After Elmo hit two free throws for Drew, John Yanniello sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around two Ryan Milford free throws to make it 42-19 with 13:46 showing on the clock. The Rangers never threatened again.

Morgan popped in 17 points to lead Wilkes. He hit 6-of-8 shots from the field, including 5-of-6 from three-point land. Constantine, who was successful on 2-of-3 long-range bombs, added 10 tallies. Yanniello had nine points and three assists, while Milford had a team-leading eight rebounds.

Greenman had 15 points and Elmo contributed 10 points and six assists to lead the Rangers.
