Washington and Lee 82, Averett 67

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington & Lee University men’s basketball team outscored Averett University 46-18 in the paint en route to an 82-67 home win over the Cougars Wednesday.

Leading 27-19 with 5:17 remaining in the half, the Generals (4-14) unleashed a 14-6 run to end the half and increase the deficit to 41-25 at the intermission. The Cougars’ (0-15) shooting woes allowed the first half W&L advantage to reach double figures. Averett shot just 33 percent from the floor and 58 percent from the free throw line in the stanza.

Like Averett has often done this season, they made a run to get back into the game in the final period. The Cougars forged a 9-2 spurt to draw to within 43-36 on a Billy Gardner lay-up with 15:31 remaining.

Averett continued to hang around and trailed 73-63 with less than five minutes to play. However, the Generals converted their late free throws, as the Cougars put them on the line in an effort to extend the game. Meanwhile, the Cougars went 1-for-8 from the floor to end the contest, which allowed the W&L advantage to reach the final 15-point margin.

Phil Landes led the Generals with 20 points on the night. Hamil Jones and Coleman Lyons each added 14 for W&L. The Generals not only used their size to convert interior points, but also out-rebounded Averett by a 48-33 margin. Chris Halkitis led the team with 10 boards.

Andrew Boor paced the Cougars’ scoring attack with a career-high 18 points. Jerrod Harris added 17 and eight rebounds, while Matthew Jordan scored 12 and Gardner added 11. Joey Barksdale added seven, as all but two of Averett’s points came from the starting line-up.

The Cougars will return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to Rocky Mount, N.C. to face North Carolina Wesleyan College at 4 p.m.
