The win capped the Pointers’ first season sweep of UW-Stout since the 1989-90 season. UW-Stevens Point, ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III, snapped the Blue Devils’ six-game winning streak and improved to 16-2 overall for the season.
The Pointers led 36-32 at halftime and held at least a four-point lead for much of the second half, pushing the lead to as many as 11 points at 57-46 with 10:07 left in the game. The lead came on the strength of a 7-0 run following a technical foul on the UW-Stevens Point bench that the Blue Devils missed both free throws.
The Blue Devils went on a 15-6 run of their own to cut the lead to 63-61 with 4:25 left. However, the Pointers made seven of their next eight free throws down the stretch. Starting the streak was a pair of free throws that Kraemer hit with 3:38 left to give the Pointers a 65-61 lead and make her the 14th player in UW-Stevens Point history to reach 1,000 career points.
Earlier in the half, Heuer hit a short jumper with 19:26 remaining to become the 13th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Pointers’ junior Amanda Nechuta hit 1,000 points on Jan. 13, giving the Pointers three 1,000-point scorers in the same season for the first time ever.
The contest was sloppy throughout as UW-Stout had 30 turnovers, including 19 in the first half, and UW-Stevens Point had 22 turnovers. The Blue Devils also shot just 35.5 percent, but held a 49-30 rebounding advantage. Despite the enormous disadvantage on the boards, the Pointers grabbed the key misses, rebounding four of the five missed shots in the final minute.
Nechuta had 14 points in the first half and finished with 18 for the game. Laura Verdegan led UW-Stout with 17 points.
