Jones, surrounded by three Pioneers, hit an off-balance three-point basket with one second left to force overtime. The ninth-ranked Warhawks prevailed in the extra session 69-64 in front of 1,390 in Williams Fieldhouse.
Jones' three-point basket tied the score at 58-58, the first time since 6-4 the Pioneers had not led. In overtime, Jones made one of two free throws with 9.4 seconds left for a 67-64 lead. Jeremy Manchester then made a steal and fed Melvin Williams, who was fouled. Williams made both free throws with 4.5 seconds to seal the game.
The Warhawks retained sole possession of first place in the league with an 8-2 mark, while the Pioneers fell to 6-4.
The Pioneers, who were picked for eighth place in the preseason poll, raced to a 42-31 halftime lead, thanks to 57 percent shooting. Reserve forward Mark Gossens scored 12 of his career-high 18 points in the first 20 minutes. The Pioneers (12-7 overall), however, were held to four field goals in the final 20 minutes.
Gossens recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Frank McGettigan added 13 points, while Tom Moliter recorded his career high, scoring 10 points off the bench.
Williams led the Warhawks (16-2 overall) with 18 points, while Angelo Griffin and Mike Toellner each had 12 points. Jones finished with 10 points.
