Carthage 77, North Central (Ill.) 71

Kenosha, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (11-6, 3-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) outlasted CCIW-opponent North Central College (11-6, 4-3 CCIW), 77-71 in overtime, on Wednesday, January 28 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Redmen have split four overtime game this year, all in conference play. Carthage fell behind by 17 points in the first half, 24-7, at 10:26 after making only one field goal in that period. The Redmen turned things around with a 20-4 run to close out the first period and trailed by just one point at halftime, 28-27. The Cardinals went up by five in the second period, 34-29, at 16:19. After four ties, Carthage took its first lead of the game, 50-47, at 5:43 on a three-pointer by Nick Nikitas. The Redmen had a 59-57 lead with 1:29 to play in regulation, but Trevor Cockayne missed both ends of two-shot foul with 30 seconds to go, and the Cardinals’ Ray Vicario made both ends with 17 seconds remaining to tie the score at 59-59. In overtime, North Central took its last lead, 61-59, at 4:28. The Redmen went up for good, 63-61, at 3:20 on a jumper by Pat Kalamatas. Carthage led by as much as eight points on four occasions in overtime and went on to win by six, 77-71. Carthage shot 35 percent for the game (17-48), while the Cardinals shot 46 percent (25-55). The Redmen set game records with 37 free throws and 55 free-throw attempts. The 37 free throws broke a mark of 33 set against Millikin University on Jan. 23, 1993 and matched against Cardinal Stritch University on Nov. 18, 1995. The 55 free-throw attempts broke a record of 52 set in the 1995 Cardinal Stritch contest. Carthage’s Kevin Menard matched his career-high of 32 points set against Indiana-Southeast this past December 6. Menard connected on seven-of-19 field goals and 15-of-17 free throws. Theo Powell had 17 points and seven rebounds. Scott Hood had 13 points on one field goal and 10-of-10 from the free-throw line, along with six assists. Patrick Flanigan and Ray Vicario each had 13 points for North Central. Carthage travels to Elmhurst, Ill., on “Super Bowl Sunday,” February 1 to take on CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (9-7, 1-4 CCIW) in a 3 p.m. contest at R.A. Faganel Hall.
