Wentworth 87, Salve Regina 85

Boston, Mass. — BOSTON, Massachusetts – Junior forward Tim Callahan (Clinton, Conn.) hit a 13-foot pull-up jumper with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Wentworth (3-11, 3-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference) to an 87-85 win over Salve Regina (3-12, 3-5).

Leading 6-5 early in the first half, Wentworth went on an 11-2 run to take a 17-7 lead 14:04 left in the first half. Junior forward Josh Taylor (Cambridge, Mass.) had six points during the run. The Seahawks used a 17-9 spurt to tie the game at 24-all on a pair of free throws from sophomore guard Matt Smolensky (New York, N.Y.) with 6:24 left in the half.

With the score knotted at 29, Wentworth used a 10-0 run to take a 39-29 lead, keyed by three-pointers from senior guard Chris Yost (Madison, N.J.) and freshman guard Troy Ramey (Newport, R.I.). The Leopards would take a 41-34 into the lockerroom.

Wentworth would increase its lead to as much as 13 with 17:24 left before Salve Regina stormed back with a 16-4 run to trim the lead to 55-54. After Wentworth built the lead back to eight points, the Seahawks scored eight straight points to tie the game.

Wentworth led by 11 (78-67) with 6:04 left, but the Seahawks would not go away, outscoring the Leopards 17-7 over the next 5:13 and trailed by one (85-84) with 51 seconds left. After Yost missed a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left, the Seahawks got the ball and senior forward Greg Kawula (Ridgewood, N.J.) was fouled driving to the basket with 18.4 seconds left. Kawula made the first free throw to tie the game at 85-all.

Callahan grabbed the rebound, and, after a time out, took the inbounds pass and pushed the ball up court. He saw an opening and drained the jumper which gave Wentworth the lead. After Salve Regina called timeout, the Seahawks had one last chance, but could not get a shot off in the 1.1 seconds.

Senior guard David Iannotti (Sandwich, Mass.) finished with 19 points, while Callahan finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Seahawks got 21 points, 11 rebounds, and nine steals from junior forward Chris Collier (Exeter, N.H.), along with 20 points and 11 boards from Kawula.
