The second half was very close, with eight tied scores and neither team holding more than a four-point lead in the final stanza. But nothing got the capacity crowd of 2700-plus out of their seats more than the final minute of the game.
With Stout (11-6, 5-4) holding a 56-55 lead, the Blugolds' Tyler Birkel stole the ball and the Blugolds worked the ball around. But Stout's Nate Templer stole the ball on the baseline with 33 seconds remaining. Greg Chaisson was fouled, and made the second free throw to put Stout up, 57-55 with 14 seconds remaining.
The Blugolds (9-9, 3-6) tossed the ball nearly full court to Jesse Breidenbach who layed the ball in to tie at 57-57.
After a Stout timeout, the Blue Devils' Isaac Reece worked the ball around the perimeter, pulled up for the jumper and missed, but Vandenberghe was there to toss the ball down the strings for the win.
Vandenberghe finished the game with a game-high 23 points. Terry Farmer came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down some key rebounds among his six.
The Blugolds, who were playing without starter Dan Archambault due to illness, were led by Casey Drake with 15. Tyler Birkel scored 12 points.
