RUTGERS-NEWARK SPOILS NJCU’S HOMECOMING, 49-44
Rutgers-Newark committed 40 of a game total of 68 turnovers, but never trailed in the first half, and survived a New Jersey City University second half rally, to hand the Gothic Knights a 49-44 loss on Homecoming weekend in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women’s basketball game at the Athletic & Fitness Center.
The win is the first for Rutgers-Newark, (2-14, 1-6 NJAC) in the league this season. NJCU falls to 5-10 overall and 0-6 in the league. The Scarlet Raiders lead the all-time series, 26-20.
Newark was led by sophomore center Christyal Anderson (Newark, NJ/University), who came off the bench to score 14 points (5-of-7 shooting) and grab eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Ree Burton (Plainfield, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge) had 11 rebounds (six defensive) and scored six on 3-of-7.
Senior guard Shakima Thomas (Newark, NJ/University) added eight points and nine rebounds (six defensive), but shot 3-of-16 and committed nine turnovers. Freshman forward Alisha McLean (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary’s) made six steals and scored seven, but had 10 turnovers.
For NJCU, sophomore point guard LATRESE MCNAIR (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) led the way with 14 points (6-of-14), seven steals, and six rebounds, but coughed up seven turnovers. Junior guard ERIKA CUBILE (Jersey City, NJ/Academy of St. Aloysius) added 11 points (5-of-15) and five steals.
Sophomore forward MEGAN KABBA (Newark, NJ/Arts) had eight points (2-of-10) and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard SHARNICE JACKSON (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) delivered six assists without a turnover in 18 minutes of reserve action.
Rutgers-Newark led 20-13 at the half, despite committing 19 turnovers in the period. NJCU battled back to tie the game at 27-27 and were up 28-27 with 11:55 left. There were eight ties and six lead changes in the second half and it remained tied at 38-38 with 5:09 remaining. McLean made back-to-back baskets to grab a 46-40 advantage with 2:56 on the board, and Newark held on for the victory.
NJCU finished shooting 29.5 percent (18-of-61), while Newark outshot (38.8, 19-of-49), and out-rebounded (52-30), the home team. NJCU did have a 23-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
NJCU returns to action on Saturday, January 24 at 6pm when the Knights visit William Paterson University, the first place team in the NJAC Blue Division, in a conference game in Wayne, NJ.
