Summers (San Antonio/Marshall) took the inbounds pass with eight seconds on the clock, dribbled up the floor, made a little move past midcourt and shot from just outside the three-point line. The buzzer sounded with the ball in mid-flight.
Summers finished with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. He also had a team-high five assists.
“Everybody stepped up and did a little bit here and there,” said Tom Oswald, Texas Lutheran head men’s basketball coach. “A lot of guys hit a lot of big shots for us. Everybody who played scored and really contributed to the win.”
Texas Lutheran improved to 11-5 overall and to 3-2 in the American Southwest Conference West Division.
Mary Hardin-Baylor fell to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the ASC West.
Texas Lutheran led by five at the half and extended its lead to 11 in the second half. Hunter Holsonback (Corpus Christi/Tuloso Midway) connected on a three-pointer at the 12:57 mark to give TLU a 57-46 lead. Holsonback’s three made it three consecutive TLU possessions with a three-pointer.
Mary Hardin-Baylor slowly sliced into the Bulldog lead over the next 11 minutes and took its first lead of the second half with 53 seconds to play. Adam Wiese’s layup gave UMHB a 69-68 lead.
Texas Lutheran responded with a Matt Nelson jumper and led 70-69 with 35 seconds on the clock. Nelson (Spring/Klein) was hampered by foul trouble throughout the game and scored four points. Jerrod Carpenter (Utopia/Utopia) played in place of Nelson and scored a career-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Mary Hardin-Baylor tied the game with eight seconds to play when Brandon Gatlin made one of two free throws. Gatlin and Jimmy Smith each scored 16 to lead the Crusaders. Justin Hejl and Ray Whitlock added 13 and 11, respectively.
Tommy Stolhandske (San Antonio/Churchill) led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He was 7-of-11 from the field. Stolhandske also recorded three assists and two blocks.
The Bulldogs return to Memorial Gymnasium next week for two ASC West games. Texas Lutheran hosts McMurry at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Hardin-Simmons at 3 p.m. Saturday.
