John Carroll 71, Capital 62

University Heights, Oh — When John Carroll faced Capital in the first half of the Ohio Athletic Conference schedule -- back on December 13th in Columbus -- the final result was a 27-point defeat suffered by the Blue Streaks, their worst loss in the last two seasons.
Today was a different story, as JCU rallied for a 71-62 victory over Capital to retain at least a share of first place in the OAC.
While Capital held the lead for a majority of the first half, the advantage was never more than five points. When JCU's Pete Moran made a lay-up in the waning seconds, he cut Capital's lead to one point at 31-30 heading into halftime.
After the break, it took nine seconds for John Carroll to grab a lead it would never relinquish . When Pete Moran drained a pair of free throws to put John Carroll up 32-31, it jump started a 13-4 run that gave the Blue Streaks a 43-35 lead with just over 14 minutes left in the second half.
Capital cut the lead to four points when Jake Beck’s lay-up off a steal made the score 52-48 with 9:39 left, but JCU answered with a 10-4 run, and took their biggest lead of the game at 62-52 when Matt Moran made a jumper at 5:34.
The closest the Crusaders got from that point was five points down on three occasions, the last of which was 67-62 when Tyler Alexander made two free throws with 43 seconds left. John Carroll would score the final four points to close out the game.
John Carroll (13-3, 8-2 OAC) was led by Pete Moran's 16 points with Matt Moran and David Gibbons scored 12 apiece. Drew Salata and Brandon Mimes both led the way with nine rebounds as JCU won the battle of the boards, 39-35.
Capital (12-5, 6-4 OAC) got a game-high 18 points from Alexander, while Jake Beck added 13 points.
This was John Carroll’s 22nd consecutive home victory dating back to the 2001-2002 season.
