Dunkirk, NY — The Plattsburgh State men’s basketball team trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half before mounting a comeback that was capped by a Curtis Smith layup with six seconds remaining in the game that tied the score at 63-63 before Fredonia answered with a pair of free throws with 4.8 seconds left that gave the Blue Devils a 65-63 victory in the SUNYAC contest in Fredonia.
Smith led the Cardinals (6-8, 2-5) with 16 points. Cameron Arterberry added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Brian Hatch chipped in 10 points for Plattsburgh.
With Fredonia up two in the closing seconds, the Cardinals did not attempt a shot as several players scrambled for a loose ball under the Plattsburgh basket.
The Cardinals return home for a 7 p.m. non-conference game Tuesday against Paul Smith’s College.
